Summer Flings

Seifer Almasy and Rinoa Heartilly. We don't know the exactly details of that one summer in Timber, but were they really in love with each other? I don't think so. The depth of their relationship, I believe, is revealed in one short conversation between Rinoa and Selphie following the announcement of Seifer's execution.
Rinoa: I...really liked him. He was always full of confidence, smart...Just by talking to him, I felt like I could take on the world.
Selphie: Your boyfriend?
Rinoa: I don't really know. I... I think I was in love. I wonder how he felt...?
Selphie: Do you still like him?
Rinoa: If I didn't, I wouldn't be talking about it. It was last summer...I was 16. Lots of fond memories...
Rinoa was probably infatuated with Seifer and thought it was love. We all know that Rinoa displays a rash way of thinking; one minute she's thinking one thing, and another she's thinking the complete opposite. She likes to rush into things head on without really thinking over it first, though this trait seems to disappear a bit when the game goes on. Rinoa tries and wants to be strong, and Seifer displays and embodies strength and ambition everywhere he goes. She might've idolized him and have been confused with her feelings; maybe Seifer brought out the daring side out of her and taught her to stand up for herself.

Rinoa also states that she thinks it was love: that, of all things, should display her uncertainty and confusion of their state of relationship - it never really seemed concrete. She thought she was in love? I may have never fallen in love, but I'm pretty sure that when you're in love, you know it. You don't question it.

Despite all of this, there's no denying that Seifer apparently cares a lot for Rinoa - he ran out of detention to go help the Forest Owls (as well as the rookie SeeDs) at the Timber T.V. Station, as well as probably introducting Rinoa to Cid. He probably did those things to help and protect her. Or then again you never know: he could've been playing the role of the hero.
