Grey Area Okay, so Seifer's a sorceress' knight. Being a knight means listening and obeying the sorceress, so you'd be guilty by association. Since you play in Squall's point of view and he's the main character, you would automatically assume that Squall is good and Seifer is evil. But what if that's not the case at all?In many cases there's no such thing as right and wrong, black or white, or yes or no. In between these choices and subjects, there's always that grey area, some more than others. Seifer's since of good and evil is so twisted during the game that he sees himself as the protagonist and Squall and the group as the evil. Seifer is so deep into his role as a knight that he tries to justify everything he does. During D-District Prison, he tells Squall that he himself is the good guy in "the tale of the evil mercernary vs. the sorceress' knight". Also, during the final battle against Edea, he tells Squall and his group, "Look at you guys, attacking like a swarm. You guys are the monsters."; even more so, he believes that he's on the good side by saying, "I ain't no monster. I'm the sorceress' knight.". Because he was acting on his sorceress' commands, he believed that everything he did was just and that Squall and co. were the antagonists and evil guys. In addition to his outlook, he also displays traits of being an anti-hero: an anti-hero is someone who has some of the personality flaws traditionally assigned to villains, but nonetheless have heroic qualities. Sometimes the line between an anti-hero and a villian is not clear. While Seifer does become one of the main antagonists of the game, he is only following a normal person's goal: to achieve the ideals he has held since his adolescence. Instead of doing it gradually, however, he became impatient and took the easiest plan - to side with the sorceress. This in return makes Seifer such an interesting character - he is so impassioned by fufilling his dream that he does not realize the severity of his actions. The line between right and wrong and black and white are blurred in his mind, making it a matter of his personal and distorted perspective. Because of this, Seifer could be called the tragic hero in the game. Return: Seifer |
